Common GM 4L60 Transmission Problems

Common GM 4L60 Transmission Problems

Common GM 4L60 Transmission ProblemsThe General Motors 4L60 transmission was introduced in 1992 and is used in many vehicles to this day. You can find it in GM products that include, but not limited the Buick Rainier, Buick Roadmaster, Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Fleetwood, Chevrolet Astro, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Canyon, GMC Safari, GMC Yukon, Hummer H3, Oldsmobile Bravada, Pontiac Firebird and Pontiac GTO. If you drive any of those vehicles, be on the lookout for these common tranny issues, as you may end up needing a transmission replacement.

Late first to second shift

If it seems as if your vehicle's transmission is shifting late or harsh between 1st and 2nd gear, meaning that the RPMs get really high before shifting, it may be that the throttle position sensor is defective. A technician will need to check the voltage of the TPS to find out if this is the case. If it is deemed to be defective it will need to be replaced to prevent further transmission problems from occurring.

Shudder shifting

Another problem you may run into is the transmission shuddering or stalling between shifts. This can often be attributed to a broken spring inside a part known as the accumulator. If that is not the issue it could be caused by the accumulator piston being cracked or cracks in the bore the piston rides in.

No reverse

It is relatively common for these vehicles to lose reverse. Many times this is due to a low reverse clutch pack and chances are that the clutch disks are simply worn. However this can also be caused by a leak in the reverse circuit caused by a blown valve body gasket or the valve body being warped. The final possible culprit would be a worn booster valve or the valve being stuck in its bore.
